Partner visa financial evidence: how to prepare

Financial evidence can be one of the more detailed parts of a partner visa application. A good starting point is to understand where the money comes from, whose income or savings may be relevant and which documents show that information clearly.

The rules and evidence depend on your circumstances. This guide offers practical preparation ideas for a conversation with a solicitor; it is not a checklist that fits every application.

Start with the source of funds

Make a note of the income sources you and your partner would like to discuss, such as employment, self-employment, savings or a pension. Include any changes in work, periods of leave or recent changes in income. GOV.UK explains that the evidence needed depends on the source and that different rules apply in some circumstances.

Having a simple timeline of jobs and income can help an adviser understand what needs closer review. Do not assume that every source can be combined or relied on in the same way.

Gather records you already have

For employment, the official guidance gives examples including payslips, bank statements showing income and a letter from the employer. Self-employment and other sources may require different evidence. Ask for a tailored list before ordering documents or assuming a particular period will apply to your case.

Where you can, organise files by person, source and date. Keep the originals and label copies clearly. If a document is missing or details do not match, make a note and discuss it rather than trying to hide the inconsistency.

Check circumstances that may change the assessment

GOV.UK describes different financial rules for certain benefit recipients and for some people extending earlier partner applications. Your solicitor will need to understand your application history and circumstances before advising which requirements to consider.

If you are unsure about a document or a change in income, include it in your list of questions. A short conversation early in the process can help you identify which evidence deserves attention.

Prepare for your consultation

  • List each income or savings source and who it belongs to.
  • Note relevant employment dates and any recent changes.
  • Write down questions about missing or unclear records.
  • Ask how the legal team prefers you to share financial documents securely.

Please do not put bank details, passport numbers or financial documents into the website enquiry form. Start with a brief message and ask the team about a secure way to share documents later.

For the current official guidance, see GOV.UK: financial requirements for partners and spouses and information and evidence for family visas, checked on 30 October 2026. You can also contact the team to discuss your circumstances.
