What happens after you apply for a UK family visa?
· 2 min read · UK Family Visa

Submitting a family visa application is a significant milestone. Once the form is sent, it can be difficult to know what happens next or how to stay organised while you wait. The steps vary according to where you apply and the instructions you receive, but a few practical habits can make the waiting period easier to manage.
Keep your application details together
Save your application confirmation, reference number and copies of any correspondence in a secure place. Make a note of the email address you used and check it regularly, including the spam folder. If a solicitor is acting for you, agree how updates will be shared.
These records help you identify your application if you need to ask a question or discuss a request for further information. Avoid posting reference numbers or personal details in public forums.
Follow your appointment instructions
GOV.UK explains that applicants need an appointment to provide biometric information, including fingerprints and a photograph. Your application instructions will explain how to arrange it and what to take. If you apply from outside the UK, check where the relevant visa application centre is and allow time to reach it.
Appointment arrangements and document submission instructions can differ. Read the instructions for your own application carefully and keep copies of appointment confirmations.
Be ready for further correspondence
If the Home Office or your representative contacts you, read the request carefully and note any deadline. Ask your solicitor if you are unsure what is being requested or how to respond. Keep a copy of what you send and when you sent it.
While waiting, avoid making assumptions about the outcome or fixed travel plans that depend on a decision. If your circumstances change, discuss the change with your adviser and check how it should be reported.
When a decision arrives
Read the decision and any accompanying instructions in full. GOV.UK says successful family visa applicants receive an eVisa, with the decision explaining how to access it. Check the information and the conditions attached to your own permission; different visa routes can have different conditions.
If the application is refused, the decision letter and your circumstances matter. A solicitor can help you understand the reasons and any options or deadlines that may apply.
